I'm sure I say it each year - about how true it is that the days are long and the years are short. It's a cliche, but it never seems more true than when you are raising kids. I know I have many flaws as a parent, but what I do know is I have done my best (ok maybe not always, there are a lot of things I wish I could have a do-over!

In a previous post I mentioned we were considering options for where Kayla will attend 6th grade. There aren't a whole lot of options. 1 She would go to the school she is zoned for. 2 We could possibly look at another middle school in our district; however, given the statistics of how students with intellectual disabilities are educated here. I don't think she would like staying at home.

When he was in preschool he would often come home with something from the treasure box for Kayla; and one time he picked a ring for me ("Now you don't have to wear that. One [my wedding ring] anymore." he told me). He said he's pretty sure he could hear what she said and he repeated it to her by saying, "You said to J to say (x,y,z) to me? I tried to find out ...

So we observed the self-contained classroom. At the middle school that Kayla is zoned for. We figured out pretty quickly that this was most likely the placement the school was going to recommend for Kayla in 6th grade. Of her day.). We learned that the students aren't assigned lockers like the rest of the school population. I wasn't completely thrille...

Riding a bike has been something I've wished for Kayla to be able to do since she was born. It is one clear memory. I have from those early days after her birth - asking Joe if he thought she would be able to ride a bike. I've been chronicling this journey for the past few years. She was almost 10 before she even started riding a bike with training wheels. True to...

She's ready for another season of ballet. Kayla, you are so beautiful! What a pretty costume, too. It definitely looked like you were having a blast up onstage! And she is so beautiful! Skip to right sidebar. Skip to left sidebar. Subscribe Now: Feed Icon. Subscribe in a reader. Wednesday, May 06, 2015. What Does Kayla Think? After posting my thoughts and feelings. About a middle school special education classroom we observed as a possible placement for Kayla, I shared Lucas' thoughts. On that little tidbit of doing laundry. Now I needed to ask Kayla what she thought; I was talking about her, after all. What kind of question is that? M, "Why not? K, "I don't want to.". K, "Yes.". Becaus...

I wanted to see what a typical child thought about the whole issue of washing uniforms in middle school. So I presented the scenario to my son. I asked him, "Lucas, when you get to middle school what would you think if you were told that your class. And only your class. Was going to learn to do laundry? I stressed that it was only his class. M, "H...

It's still in his piggy bank. A few weeks ago he asked me, "Mom can you give me two $10 bills for my $20? Me, "Ok, but how come you want two 10s for the 20? L, "Because I'm going to give $10 to the homeless shelter and $10 to the animal shelter.". M, "Wow, you're going to donate the whole $20? L, "Yeah.". Much More ...
